Women in India are a fundamental pillar of the household and the transmitters of values and traditions. However, their role is not recognized in a country where at birth a female child birth is often still considered a burden. This situation is worse in the poorest communities in which women suffer the double discrimination of both their gender and belonging to a low caste which is excluded from society.

Lights of Hope is trying to launch micro-credits for women with families as well as workshops for sewing, fabric printing, incense-making and book-binding so that the women are trained in these trades. In this way, they will begin making products which will increase their monthly income. These workshops will be accompanied by a literacy program. Women can learn, for example, about their sexual and reproductive rights. They will learn to read and read laws that deal their rights. This program aims to raise awareness among women regarding their rights and to provide psychological support to women in domestic situations which sometimes involve serious abuse or mistreatment.
