Fair Trade trade organizations make up an alternative trading system which offers producers direct access to northern markets as well as proper working conditions and trade which is fair and equal. The goal is to assure a sustainable means of making a living.
The Fair Trade organizations in India with whom Lights of Hope work employ a large number of people belonging to marginalized groups of the Indian population (Dalits, women, the Adivasis, etc.) and give them jobs with decent working conditions. From India we import the original products they make, in effect making the products completely original solidarity gifts.
These organizations must follow certain basic criteria so that their products are classified as fair trade products:
- Provide wages for a decent life
- No child exploitation
- Have equality between men and women
- Be environmentally friendly
- Provide rights for workers
